Finally took the 550 out on a road trip. Really what it was made for. Above is the new average speed: 50.1 mph, up from 30.9. Getting to drive 260ish miles each way on mostly 75mph-limit roads will do that. Man, it was just a low-flying business jet. As quiet and comfortable at 95 as it is at 65.
And I finally cracked 20mpg average! Took nine months, but finally did it. It was awesome to watch the range calculator keep going up as the trip went on. Fifty miles in, it thought it had about fifty more miles to empty than when I'd filled the tank.
Before we left, I told my girlfriend that if I was going to be doing all the driving (which was pretty much a given), then we were taking my car instead of her CX5. The only downside is how much it highlighted just how fucking awful Texans are with lanes. Just clueless. "75MPH speed limit? I'll do 55 in the left lane and stay out of the way." "Traffic coming up from behind? Better pull into the left lane and slow down." "Whoa, the road is straight and empty for the next like four miles? Better hit the brakes for no reason."
I coulda made way better numbers without entering jail-time-territory if it weren't for all the roadblocks behind the wheel. Regardless, all I can say is: damn. I've never had a better 500 miles. Never has a 4-hour stint been as effortless. Or quiet. Or fast. Never have I arrived at my destination feeling less than wiped out. I finally got to do what the car was made for, and it feels pretty damn good. I gave it a pat on the roof when we were done, because my arms aren't long enough to give it a big hug.
Thanks for listening, Oppo. Hope y'all have had a great Labor Dabor.

what part of texas are you in that people are driving slow? pretty much left lane is balls-fast everywhere in the state...
What year is that? I have an 06 and routinely get 22-25mpg (per the computer at least) driving long distances

Austin to Port A on a holiday weekend. And the numbers are cumulative, not just for the trip.

Haha the things that make us N/A V8 BMW owners happy... Cracking 20 MPG is a serious accomplishment!

20 mpg AVERAGE. Eat that, V6 Accord owners!
Seriously, I've been trying since I bought it to hit that number, and I finally took it on a road trip, which is, after all, what the damn thing was built for. To me, it felt like what the 5th gen fighter program finally achieved: supercruise. Sustained Mach 1 without afterburner.
I just wish I had more reasons to drive it really long distances.

Haha that's an awesome way to describe it!

It sounded like you were describing the drivers on I-35. I think most of those 'Texas' drivers are from a bit farther south. The Houston area doesn't have the reverse fast lane problem. They may have other problems, but not that one.

35 was the worst (as expected). 37 was mostly great, except for the giantass multi car accident today. We just missed the worst of it.
But even on the way down, all the left lane hogs were Tahoes, Rams, or 150s. No one can ever just set the goddamn cruise control. Speed differentials of 20+ mph are, apparently, normal.

even in Austin the f350 is normally doing 85+
And yup, city mileage sucks. I probably get 16-17. definitely not a good commuter car if you care about mileage
